PROGRESS ON POLICY...

Alaska Adopts Soft Money Disclosure Regulation  The Alaska Public Offices Commission adopted a regulation in mid-November requiring political parties to disclose soft money donors and expenditures beginning the next election cycle. Institute for Women's Policy Research Releases 2002 Status of Women Reports
The Institute for Women's Policy Research recently released the 2002 Status of Women in the States report, which ranks states from "best" to "worst" for women based on the following indicators: employment and earnings, political participation, social and economic autonomy, health care, and reproductive rights. 2000. IWPR also released in-depth reports for nine states: AL, IA, KS, MA, MO, RI, SC, WV, WI. CPA's 2002 Awards Dinner - November 22, Washington, DC At this special event, CPA paid tribute to outstanding progressive leaders and the 2002 Fellows of CPA's Flemming Institute. CPA honored AFSCME International President Gerald McEntee for playing a central role in the reinvigoration of the labor movement; Fannie Mae Foundation President and CEO Stacey Davis Stewart in recognition of her work in advancing homeownership and quality housing for all Americans; Washington Rep. Phyllis Gutierrez Kenney for her leadership as an exemplary public official; and Kate Kahan, Executive Director of Working for Equality and Economic Liberation for her work on poverty issues in her home state of Montana.

CPA's Summit on the States - November 23-24, Washington, DC   This year, our Summit attracted more than 300 state legislators and advocates from 44 states. From the opening plenary with national pollsters to the closing session with former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich, we sought to provide practical and user-friendly information to help prepare participants for the 2003 legislative sessions. CPA Selects 30 Legislators for the 2003 Flemming Leadership Institute Congratulations to the 30 state legislators selected to participate in the 2003 Flemming Leadership Institute. The diverse members of the 2003 class have demonstrated superior leadership ability, dedication to public service, and a commitment to use government to implement practical policy solutions. The 2003 fellows will convene for their first retreat in January. For a list of the 2003 class members, click here.

CPA Releases New Policy Brief on Oral Health Legislation in the States  In recent years, state lawmakers have recognized the need for stronger oral health policy initiatives. CPA's latest policy brief,Overview of 2002 Oral Health State Legislation, tracks the newest wave of state legislation on oral health in order to provide readers with an understanding of what direction policymakers are taking and a synopsis of "best practices" in the states. The Corporation for Economic Development website for its newly released State Asset Development Report Card captures the most up-to-date data available on asset distribution and policy for each of the 50 states. It considers 68 socioeconomic and policy measures to compare states on how assets are accumulated, distributed, and protected among their citizens. Those interested in designing policies to promote asset development and economic self-sufficiency at the state level will be interested in CFED's recommendations and key findings.
