New Jersey Ends GLBT Discrimination in Housing

A bill that adds gender identity and expression to the state’s anti-discrimination laws has been signed into law by New Jersey Gov. Jon Corzine. Under the new law, discrimination in housing, employment and public accommodations is prohibited. SB 362, sponsored by Sen. Ellen Karcher, was inspired by a New Jersey appellate court ruling that declared discrimination on the basis of sexual identity to be unconstitutional. For more information, read CPA’s GLBT Anti-Discrimination policy brief and model legislation.

Security Breach Notification to Counter ID Theft in Michigan

Gov. Jennifer Granholm signed a bill that mandates the notification of Michigan residents when the security of their personal information has been breached. SB 305 by Sen. Shirley Johnson requires that individuals, businesses and government agencies inform consumers if information that could be used to commit identity theft, such as a social security number or driver’s license number, is exposed. For more information, read CPA’s Identity Theft Protection policy brief and model legislation.

Michigan Steps Up to Support Stem Cell Research

Michigan will develop a statewide network of umbilical cord blood stem cell banks under a new law signed by Gov. Jennifer Granholm. HB 6291 by Rep. Glenn Steil also mandates that the state distribute information about the new banks. The cells stored in the banks will be used for medical research. The new law does not include provisions about embryonic stem cell research or collection. For more information, read CPA’s Stem Cell Research policy brief and model legislation.
